The Attack on DEI: What’s Behind It and What Comes Next
After spending years stoking panics about “wokeness” and “critical race theory,” right-wing activists have launched another set of broadsides against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. According to these critics, “DEI” is frighteningly effective – an assault on cherished American principles that must be opposed and even proscribed. What is the meaning of this escalation, particularly as it coincides with the end of affirmative action? How does it stifle or divert broader conversations about equality?
Speakers:
Jamelle Bouie is a columnist for the New York Times. He covers history and politics. In addition, he co-hosts the Unclear and Present Danger podcast on the political and military thrillers of the 1990s. Prior to the Times, Bouie was chief political correspondent for Slate magazine. And before that, he was a staff writer at The Daily Beast and held fellowships at The American Prospect and The Nation magazine. He attended the University of Virginia, where he graduated with degrees in political and social thought, and government.
Hakeem Jefferson is an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University. His research focuses broadly on questions related to race and identity. He is the faculty director of the Program on Identity, Democracy, and Justice at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. He is also a faculty affiliate with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity.
Moira Weigel is an Assistant Professor of Communications Studies at Northeastern University, a Faculty Associate of the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard Law School, and a founder of Logic magazine. She is also the author of Labor of Love: The Invention of Dating (2016) and co-editor, with Ben Tarnoff, of Voices from the Valley: Tech Workers Talk About What They Do and How They Do It (2020), as well as a regular contributor to the Guardian, The New Republic, and The New York Times among other publications. She is currently working on a book about transnational e-commerce.
