#metoo: Navigating Sexual Harassment, Power Differentials, and Gender Inequity in Academic Medicine

This 90-minute talk and discussion will provide information on the historical evolution of women’s participation in the medical profession and evidence suggesting dysfunction in the pipeline to leadership in academic medicine. Dr. Jagsi will review research that she and others have led to investigate the nature and causes of gender inequities, including unconscious biases, gendered expectations of society, and overt discrimination and harassment. She will describe behavioral science and legal definitions of sexual harassment, share insights from decades of research in occupational psychology, and lead a discussion of targeted interventions to combat harassment and promote gender equity.

About the speaker: Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, is Professor, Deputy Chair, and Residency Program Director in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine at the University of Michigan.

She graduated first in her class from Harvard College and then pursued her medical training at Harvard Medical School. She also served as a fellow in the Center for Ethics at Harvard University and completed her doctorate in Social Policy at Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar.

Her social scientific research includes research into issues of bioethics related to cancer care (including the ethics of big data collection and use in learning health systems, resource allocation, conflicts of interest, and the ethics of fundraising from grateful patients) and gender equity, including studies of women's representation in the medical profession, challenges, and supportive interventions.  Also an active clinical trialist and health services researcher, Dr. Jagsi’s medical research focuses on improving the quality of care received by breast cancer patients, both by advancing the ways in which breast cancer is treated with radiation and by advancing the understanding of patient decision-making, cost, and access to appropriate care.
